It's true that trying to be ecological in a world where we're taught from a young age to consume what big corporations want us to consume is difficult. I myself have felt frustrated on this journey of becoming more environmentally friendly, so it will be a transformative journey for both you and me.

Something that helped me a lot was watching documentaries (not just about fashion and textiles) that showed me the reality of many things we don't see, the consequences of our actions often due to our ignorance.

The Minimalist

Available on Netflix and their website + a podcast.

This is the one that has had the biggest impact on me. Joshua and Ryan encompass everything, from our way of living and consuming things, to the reality that many companies keep quiet. The fact that every day we chase things that we think bring happiness and that in reality: we don't need.

Plastic Island

Available on Youtube, a local documentary.

As its tagline says: It's a local look at a global problem. These types of documentaries show us the side that not everyone sees, but that is so close to us, and worse, to know that we are part of the problem. Our Dominican Republic is beautiful, and like all countries in the world, it must be carefully preserved.

Cowspiracy

Available on Netflix and their website.

Believe it or not, our planet is so perfect that everything is directly related; what we damage in one aspect affects everything else. Cowspiracy teaches us how industrial farm animal production (like cows, pigs, etc.) affects our Earth's natural resources and why it has been ignored for so long (including by environmentalists).

Chasing Coral

Available on Netflix and their website.

It helped me to better understand corals, their types, and the environment they need to live. Our actions are being reflected in our system, and we don't even realize it.

I hope these documentaries help you see the problem with our current lifestyle and inspire you to change it for the better.

With love, Laura Ortíz.
